Who is this program for

This program targets Canadian citizens and permanent residents aged 18 or older who wish to reunite their family in Canada by sponsoring their spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner. The sponsor must commit to providing for their partner for 3 years and must not be under a removal order, in prison, or have an undischarged bankruptcy.

Main criteria

Process steps

1. Verify sponsor and partner eligibility

Confirm you are eligible as a sponsor and that your partner meets program criteria.

2. Gather required documents

Prepare all documents: relationship proof, identity documents, police certificates, medical exams, photos, etc.

3. Submit sponsorship and PR application

Submit the sponsorship application (sponsor) and permanent residence application (partner) together through the IRCC online portal.

4. Sponsored partner biometrics

The sponsored partner must provide biometrics at a designated center after receiving the instruction letter.

5. Medical examination

The sponsored partner completes a medical exam with an IRCC-designated physician.

6. Interview (if required)

IRCC may request an interview to verify the authenticity of the relationship. Prepare to answer detailed questions.

7. Decision and PR confirmation

If approved, the partner receives Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR). If abroad, they also receive an immigrant visa.
