Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP). Up to 8 months per year for workers from Mexico and Caribbean. Simplified process.

Processing time: 4-10 weeks
Verified on: January 27, 2026

Who is this program for

SAWP targets agricultural workers who are citizens of Mexico or one of the participating Caribbean countries (Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, and member states of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States). Candidates must have agricultural work experience, be in good physical health to perform the work, be available for the entire contract duration (up to 8 months), and agree to return to their home country at the end of the contract.

Main criteria

1
Be a citizen of Mexico or a participating Caribbean country
2
Have agricultural work experience
3
Be selected by the home country government
4
Pass a medical exam
5
Commit to working only for the designated employer
6
Agree to return to home country at the end of the contract

Process steps

1. Employer applies for LMIA (agricultural stream)

The Canadian agricultural employer submits a SAWP-specific LMIA application to Service Canada, indicating the number of workers needed and working conditions.

2. Worker selection by home country

Once the LMIA is approved, the home country government (Mexico or Caribbean country) selects qualified workers according to the employer's criteria.

3. Medical exam and permit processing

Selected workers undergo a medical exam. The work permit application is then processed by IRCC.

4. Travel and arrival in Canada

The worker travels to Canada. The employer is responsible for providing housing and sometimes transportation. The work permit is issued upon arrival.

5. Work and return home

The worker performs agricultural work for the contract duration (max 8 months). At the end, they return to their home country.
