Who is this program for

The study permit extension targets international students whose current study permit is expiring and who wish to continue their studies. This includes students whose program takes longer than expected, those changing programs (e.g., advancing to a higher level), those changing institutions, students who have completed a program and want to start a new one, and those who need to retake courses.

Main criteria

1
Have a valid study permit or have submitted application before expiration
2
Be enrolled or accepted in an eligible study program
3
Continue to meet eligibility criteria (funds, health, security)
4
Have actively studied and progressed in the program
5
Obtain a new CAQ if studying in Quebec (if previous one expires)

Process steps

1. Check your permit expiration date

Submit your extension application AT LEAST 30 days before your current permit expires. Ideally, start the process 3-4 months in advance.

2. Obtain a new letter of acceptance (if necessary)

If you are changing programs or institutions, or if your original acceptance letter no longer covers your study period, obtain a new letter.

3. Renew CAQ (if studying in Quebec)

If your CAQ expires before your expected end of studies, apply for a new CAQ from MIFI before submitting the study permit extension.

4. Gather required documents

Prepare: passport, current letter of acceptance, proof of enrollment, proof of funds, new CAQ (if Quebec), recent transcripts.

5. Submit online application

Log into your IRCC account and submit your study permit extension application online.

6. Wait with implied status

If you submitted your application before expiration, you have implied status allowing you to legally continue your studies during processing.

7. Receive new permit

Once approved, your new study permit is mailed or available for download in your IRCC account.
